Call for papers: "Innovation in Latin America"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Transitions and Innovation Systems.

The aim of this special issue is to attract research that addresses and discusses the emergence, status and outlook for innovation in Latin America embodied in its many aspects and dimensions. The transformational (and disruptive) prowess of globalisation continues to impact nearly every nation on the globe. Industrialised and developing countries in every region are experiencing its effects economically, socially, and politically. While both the public and private sectors have, indeed, allocated greater resources to boost growth (and profitability), in manufacturing, services, and natural resources, sustaining competitive levels of performance is more and more difficult. The recognised solution for countries, industries, and firms is to innovate.

Innovation is impacting every region and functional dimension of the global economy. It is an essential driver of economic productivity, social progress, and ultimately human achievement. Innovation is inextricably tied to success and profit, whether the enterprise is a technological giant like Microsoft or Siemens; a natural resources firm like CVRD or BHP Billiton; a conglomerate like Samsung or GE; or a small or medium-sized global enterprise.

With reference to Latin America, it is the second most entrepreneurial region in the world, according to the World Bank. Its Internet and mobile density are higher than the world average, and the accelerated pace of start-ups - both tech and non-tech based - has been occurring irrespective of economic and political ups and downs in the region. Last year, start-ups in Latin American ballooned to 1,333 and accelerators to 62, with investment approaching $32 million.

Within this context the ecosystem of innovation in Latin America is built upon the interrelationship between three drivers: national policy (although subnational policies are important, as well), facilitating institutions (e.g. science parks, R&D labs, accelerators, incubators), and firm-level innovation. Each continues to shape the competitiveness of countries and regions in the hemisphere, as well.

There is a real challenge to innovation in Latin America in that the level of R&D activity is far below that in the Triad countries (US, Japan, and EU), as well as far below that in Eastern Europe and developing Asia. It would be useful to see some discussion of how Latin American companies and governments can stimulate more R&D – as well as pursuing even greater innovation in business models and practices, as evidenced by the high level of entrepreneurship noted above.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Innovation in the structure, organisation and management of the firm
  • Product, process, service and business model innovation
  • Macro-level economic and regulatory policies that impact innovativeness
  • New thinking on innovation in the services sector
  • Innovation in HR policies and practices
  • Open Innovation
  • Innovation in export-oriented small and medium size firms
  • How do we measure innovation?

Call for papers: "Pluralism with Purpose: Applying a Pluralist Approach to Informing Policy"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Pluralism and Economics Education.

Understanding economic phenomena by using pluralism in teaching and research is an intensely debated problem. We believe that an increased focus on applied pluralist approaches is now required (e.g. to operationalise the OECD’s new approaches to economic challenges programme). We need both a shared understanding of the meaning of a pluralist approach to understanding economic phenomena, including feasibly applied methods from relevant disciplines and a means of choosing one or more amongst them.

Pluralism is, however, more than applications, it is also about culture, institutions and relationships, including those between economists and amongst other social scientists. So, for instance, the OECD discusses the need for ‘appropriate changes in the structure of the organisation to avoid one-size-fits-all and move beyond a silo-approach to policy, to enhance inter-disciplinarily and to safeguard against groupthink’. This also applies to so-called heterodox economists as they are clearly not automatically pluralist in practise or outlook. Pluralism is not about replacing one dogma with another one.

This call for papers welcomes a dialogue with mainstream economists, both academics and practitioners, to build bridges and break down walls within the economics discipline and between economics and other disciplines. We are looking particularly for papers focusing on the application of pluralist approaches in terms of methods, but also in terms of the institutions and behaviour necessary to solidify pluralism.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • What is an applied pluralist approach? When can it be said to be scientific?
  • What can economics learn from the natural and social sciences?
  • What can we learn from practices in multi-disciplinary research centres?
  • What is the scope for application i.e. how do we define the economy or economic phenomena?
  • What are the methods and procedures for applying a pluralist approach to understanding economic phenomena? How to decide the methods or combination of methods fit for purpose? How must theories, methods and evidence interact?
  • How can pluralism be supported within the policy making process and within government institutions?
  • How does pluralism as a modus vivendi relate to a modus operandi in terms of institutions, behaviour, methods, etc.

Call for papers: "Strategies for Global Competitiveness and Economic Growth"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Business and Globalisation.

The world economy is going through a difficult phase marked by sluggish growth in the developed economies, conflict of interests between developing and the developed world, further marred by regional economic strains, armed conflicts and challenging international economic cooperation. While the markets in the developing world, including Africa, Asia and South America, are waiting to be unlocked and tapped by the MNCs, the competition is getting more intense in the existing scenario.

Policymakers are struggling to find ways to co-operate and manage the current economic challenges while preparing their economies to perform well in an increasingly difficult and unpredictable global landscape. Amid short-term crisis management, it remains critical for countries to establish the fundamentals that underpin economic growth and development for the longer term. The complexity of today’s global economic environment has been further confounded by concerns of social and environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusiveness. In the marketplace, e-commerce and the new market entrants are becoming exceedingly aggressive making destabilisation of established players frequent headlines.

The resultant dynamics call for a relook at the pertinent strategies for global competitiveness as well as economic growth in the developing and the developed economies. The conclave aims at bringing together academicians, corporate professionals, policy makers, practitioners and experts working in the field of business management, in order for exchange of information and to discuss diverse challenges and strategies related to global competitiveness and economic growth.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at Strategies for Global Competitiveness and Economic Growth (SGCEG 2017), but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Challenges of business and strategies for global competitiveness in 21st century
  • Global challenges and opportunities for economic growth
  • Innovative marketing strategies for global competitiveness
  • Human resource challenges and strategies in the 21st century
  • Developments in financial management for strategic advantage

Connected migrants

Contrary to common perception, migrants and refugees are often well connected in terms of mobile technology, using smart phones for communications, mapping and social networking during their journeys. Moreover, many economic or political refugees find themselves in camps that sometimes even offer them recharging stations for their devices or a wireless internet connection.

Migrants from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria often use mobile technology to assist them in escaping their fate in their home country and ultimately in finding a new home. Technology might act as a rough guide to destinations and transit points in countries such as Turkey and Greece, as well as providing access to friends and family who can lend them money to continue the journey.

Judith Zijlstra of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) at the University of Amsterdam and Ilse van Liempt of the Human Geography Department at Utrecht University share details of their case study on the use of mobile technology by migrants on their way to Europe. The article is published in the International Journal of Migration and Border Studies.

The authors have used a research approach known as trajectory ethnography that allows them to understand how mobile technology affects the journey of migrants: “This methodology leads to a more nuanced understanding of irregular migration because it enables us to capture the complex dynamics involved in irregular migration processes and to reflect on decisions taken by migrants throughout the process,” the team reports.

The team demonstrates that mobile technologies and smart phones increase migrants’ mobility by enlarging individuals’ access to online information during their journey and by promoting new interconnections between migrants en route. Migrants try to build contacts with migrants who have already completed the journey, as the information given by them is considered more trustworthy.

Nevertheless, the availability of a smart phone is not a panacea that will always assist a migrant in crossing borders safely or reaching the intended destination. “Differences in educational background, digital literacy and foreign language skills have an important effect on migrants’ ability to actually use and profit from mobile technology,” the team explains. In addition, migrants are still the ones that have to make strategic decisions on the goal and continuation of their trip.

Call for papers: "Learning, Change, Innovation and Leadership in South Asia and East Asia"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Learning and Change.

Globalisation has triggered a search for new ways of doing business worldwide. Globalisation necessitates learning and also provides tremendous opportunities for mutual learning, which must be created and tapped into to keep up with the pace of relentless change (Brown and Eisenhardt, 1997). According to Khilji and Rowley (2013), South Asia offers a new perspective on these issues and learning plays an extensive role in addressing the challenges raised by globalisation. A rich history, vast population and many diverse cultures make East Asia a fascinating area for study. China, a part of East Asia and one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies, is home to great cultural traditions and complex and rapidly changing societies. With the international environment becoming more competitive and demanding, South Asia and East Asia need to adapt to the changing needs of the world, which can be educational, technological or social. According to the World Bank (2013), South Asia is a region where transformation and complexity are most apparent, and a report by the World Bank itself in 2016 states that growth in developing East Asia is expected to remain resilient over the next three years.

Even though South Asia is having a growing influence on the global economy, there are many challenges that hinder its socioeconomic development. Khilji (2012) identifies the many challenges in South Asia with reference to demography, human development agendas, corruption and the security situation. It is home to half of the world’s poorest population (World Bank, 2013). Human development in particular is a low national priority (Ghani, 2011), which has resulted into low literacy rates, gender disparities, uneven income distribution and a low percentage of professional workers the in workforce. According to Zakaria (2008), quality of education is questionable in this region. Corruption is widespread and has severely undermined economic growth. In addition, Khilji (2012) contends that terrorism and internal conflicts in some countries (particularly Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan) deter foreign investment and economic development. Furthermore, according to Ahmed and Ghani (2007), it is the least integrated region in the world. South Asian organisations are facing many challenges that include a rapidly growing population (Khilji, 2012), poor organisational design, lack of visionary leadership (Balasooriya et al., 2010; Khilji and Wang, 2006), and rigid business policies that generally hinder the growth of smaller entrepreneurial firms, resulting in frustration among managers (Khilji, 2013). Hence South Asian countries have to improve their skills and innovation capabilities to improve their economic performance and welfare (Dahlman, 2007).

On the other hand, East Asia has shown accelerated growth since the global financial crisis. In 1990, more than 60 percent of people in East Asia were in extreme poverty; now, only 3.5 percent are. East Asia emerged as the global hub for manufacturing, particularly in information technology products. Production is fragmented across the region, but knitted together in vertically integrated supply chains to serve global markets. But this region also faces many challenges. According to the World Bank, many countries in the region have to worry about losing as much as 15 percent of their working-age population by 2040. Aging population and low fertility rates are to be blamed as 36 percent of the world's population aged over 65 currently live in East Asia. It is a region of many half-frozen conflicts and has a host of territorial and maritime disputes. In spite of accelerated economic growth the region has many domestic problems, such as regional inequality, environmental degradation and corruption, which all threaten its economic strength.

Trillions of dollars of financial wealth have been eroded and millions of jobs have been wiped out in the wake of global financial crisis. Organisations in the West have finally woken up to the East-meets-West approach (Chen and Miller, 2010; Prahalad and Mashelkar, 2010; Tung, 2012; Wooldridge, 2010). This approach requires a blending of ideas, high cultural awareness and an openness that leads to mutual learning. Knowing how to change has become a critical challenge for all organisations in today’s complex environment (Piderit, 2000; Zhou et al., 2006). Organisations should develop global networks of meaningful social relations that facilitate learning and engage in adaptive change. Learning is essential for South Asian and East Asian organisations in order to address the challenges these region are facing. This learning does not only have to come from the West. According to Khilji (2013), South and East Asia can learn a lot from each other – thus advancing an “East-meets-East” approach. The West can also learn from the East in terms of leadership. In fact, scholars and practitioners are being urged to take a closer look at and learn from Indian practices and Indian corporate leaders (Cappelli et al., 2010; Kristie, 2010; Power, 2011). Other business practices, such as the BRAC and social business models that originated in Bangladesh, are also being emulated in the West now.

Both micro- and macro-level studies are invited for this special issue. Quantitative and qualitative approaches are also welcome. We encourage authors to come forward with promising topics to diversify and widen research on the given theme.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the Conference on Peaceful and Prosperous South Asia-Opportunities and Challenges (ICSA-2017), but we are also inviting other experts to submit articles for this call.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Regional integration for adaptive change
  • Leadership in South and East Asia
  • Innovation in South and East Asia
  • South and East Asian business models for prosperity
  • Educational change in South and East Asia

Call for papers: "Niche Tourism and Residents' Well-being in Island Destinations"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Tourism Anthropology.

Islands, due to various characteristics such as idyllic environments, remoteness and rich natural and cultural fabric, have always been considered desirable destinations. In fact, islands have relied on tourism not only for increasing their economic prosperity, but also for effectively handling challenges they face such as limited resources, segregation, dependency on the rest world, and structural concerns. As such, tourism for many islands has become one of their main pillars of development as well as a core source of income and employment. Nonetheless, in our turbulent globalised environment more and more islands need to find ways to deal with significant competitive forces while at the same time keep their genuine character, without compromising their attractiveness.

In this regard, island destinations endeavour to develop special forms of tourism with the aim of diversifying their tourism product, acquiring competitive edge and ultimately rejuvenating their tourism industries. With evidence that contemporary global trends require islands to be competitive but also sustainable for their future development, emphasis needs to be given to matters regarding how efficiently and effectively niche tourism is managed and how this can influence expansion of the prosperity of local residents. Moreover, in a time where niche forms of tourism seem to counterbalance the misruled mass tourism development of recent decades, practices concerning how islands destinations are planned and projected are questioned in terms of their effectiveness and/or adverse impacts on their sustainable development in economic, environmental and sociocultural terms, and also impact on island residents’ well-being.

An important theme that therefore needs to be addressed is the identification of how niche forms of tourism developed on island destinations may affect the overall prosperity of the islands’ inhabitants. In this respect, the aim of this special issue is to examine various special forms of niche tourism on islands; how these could be sustainably developed and managed under current global conditions, intensive competition and various types of crises (environmental, economic, political, social); and mainly, how they can affect the overall quality of life of indigenous people. The issue will provide an opportunity for academics, practitioners, policy makers, consultants and researchers to discuss and exchange ideas and methodologies concerning the various types of niche tourism on islands, their contributions to maximising tourism potential as well as their residents’ well-being, and strategies and measures for their long-term sustainable development.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers that focus on (but not limited to) the following themes applied to an island context:
  • Sustainable tourism development: competitiveness versus sustainability and residents' well-being
  • Best practices for special forms of tourism management and residents' well-being
  • Criticism of niche tourism forms on islands and residents' well-being
  • Sustainable management of island destinations
  • Niche tourism and destination authenticity
  • Niche tourism on islands and cultural changes, cultural/interest conflicts
  • Globalisation, industrialisation, commercialisation, post-modernism and island residents' prosperity

Call for papers: "Research on the Social Impact of Technological Innovation"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Business and Globalisation.

The purpose of this special issue is to continue and to extend the academic dialogue about business, enterprises (not only small and medium ones but also the large and multinational companies), as well as globalisation. We aim to foster a further understanding of these topics, which are of increasing in relevance around the world.

Indonesia has more than 52 million units of small and medium enterprises. This shows that the entrepreneurial intent of Indonesian people is tremendously high. Notwithstanding that Indonesia still has social problems, such as a high level of poverty and unemployment. The existence of SMEs in Indonesia has given a lot of contributions to the problem stated. That being said, small and medium enterprises hold a significant role as the economic drive.

At present, Indonesia is facing the ASEAN – China free trade area (ACFTA). In consequence, small and medium enterprises need to be continuously developed in order to increase the competitiveness level of local products compared to the overseas ones. The development is conducted by preparing the SMEs in becoming global actors in the international market. Apart from governmental support in assisting the SMEs in managing the business, knowledge and technology application are also needed by micro, small and medium enterprises in order to push on the competitiveness level in addressing the free trade.

In order to synchronise the economic growth and the welfare of the society, the government needs to work together with all of the Indonesian people. Active roles of the researchers, business people, the government, and also students are required in solving the problem, not only in the form scientific creations but also the technical practices in business. Entrepreneurship poses as one of the supporting factors in Indonesian welfare and economic growth. The small number of entrepreneurs (1.5% of total population, based on the ministry of state owned enterprise) in the country is still lacking. Indonesia needs at least 2.5% out of the population as entrepreneurs so that the country is significantly growing in prosperity. The researchers and academicians are also obliged in supporting and strengthening the national innovation system in the production, process, and marketing areas in order to reinforce a sustainable global competitiveness, toward an innovation-driven economy.

We welcome qualitative as well as quantitative and mixed methodologies, as long as this is well grounded in the literature. Please see the following articles:

Students buy counterfeit software
A survey of students in India suggests that many buy counterfeit, or pirated, computer software, do not consider their purchases unethical despite being well aware of the option to buy legitimate versions. Fundamentally, “the results suggests that factors like value consciousness, lesser knowledge of copyright laws and novelty seeking behaviour of users are key determinants for purchasing pirated software,” the team reports. Ultimately, this attitude could have a detrimental effect on company profits for the originators of such software and worse still affect their brand in a negative way of pirated software is over lower quality than the legitimate product. The team suggests that educating students early about how they are breaking the law in using pirated software will be important in reducing this form of product abuse.

On the internet nobody knows you’re a dog
There is a common perception that even shy and introverted individuals are as active as their extrovert counterparts on social media. However, a study from India that investigates personality type with social media use suggests a more obvious correlation that extroverts spend more time spent on social media, share more information and activity publicly. In contrast those with so-called neuroticism show a negative correlation relationship with overall social media use. “A significant difference is found between the time spent on social media and frequency of use of social media on mobile phone for different personality categories,” the team says. There are useful implications for human resource managers in recruitment and training inasmuch as a candidate’s personality type might be betrayed by considering their social media use and this might then inform more effective decision making with better long-term outcomes for a given job.

Work-life balance
Researchers in India hoped to discover whether or not emotional intelligence contributes to personal contentment. As such, they have explored the association between work-life balance and job satisfaction. Their survey of 180 workers in healthcare organisations suggests that work-life balance and job satisfaction are positively correlated as one might expect. Moreover, this is mediated by emotional intelligence. “The results of the study offer possibility to develop intervention plans which includes wisdom and emotional intelligence as the principal component to increase the overall job satisfaction of employed professionals,” the team concludes.

Taking back control with a fuzzy cuckoo
Search optimisation inspired by nature is an important aspect of non-linear control systems. As such, a team in India has now turned to the parasitic bird, the cuckoo, which lays its eggs in the nests of other avian species. The chicks then out-compete the natural chicks of those birds, taking all their nest space and food and thriving to become the next generation to the detriment of the natural offspring, which usually die before reaching adulthood. The way in which cuckoos search for appropriate nests is embedded in a novel algorithm that can quickly seek out solutions to a problem. The team has validated their approach with an experimental setup of a food industry process using a conical tank to determine optimal liquid discharge rate for a given set of parameters.
